Common signs
Lingering sensitivity, throbbing pain, pain on biting, gum swelling or a darkened tooth can indicate pulp problems.
What happens
Under local anaesthesia, the infected pulp is removed, canals are cleaned and sealed, and the tooth is restored.
Why a crown?
Back teeth that have had RCT are more prone to fracture, so a crown is often recommended.
Recovery
Mild tenderness for a few days is common. Contact your dentist if swelling or pain increases.
Myth check
Modern root canal treatment is usually no more uncomfortable than a filling, thanks to effective anaesthesia.
