Dental Implants for Missing Teeth

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth, giving a crown or bridge a stable foundation. Every implant plan at Dental One G begins with a careful examination and imaging.

Dental Implants for Missing Teeth — Dental One G

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium (or titanium-alloy) post placed in the jaw bone where a natural tooth root used to be. Once the bone has healed around it, the implant supports a custom crown, bridge or denture that is designed to look and function like natural teeth.

Implants can replace a single tooth, several neighbouring teeth, or support a full arch. Because they are anchored in the bone, they do not rely on the adjacent teeth for support in the way a conventional bridge does.

Common reasons patients seek dental implants

  • A tooth lost to decay, gum disease or injury
  • A tooth that cannot be saved and needs extraction
  • Difficulty chewing because of gaps
  • A loose or uncomfortable removable denture
  • Wanting a fixed alternative to a removable appliance
  • Concern about neighbouring teeth drifting into a gap

Who may benefit?

  • Adults whose jaw growth is complete
  • People with healthy gums, or gum disease that has been treated and controlled
  • Patients with enough bone to support an implant — or who are suitable for bone grafting
  • People willing to maintain good oral hygiene and attend reviews
  • Patients whose general health allows minor oral surgery (smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and some medicines can affect healing — your dentist will discuss this)

Only a dental examination can confirm whether this treatment is right for you.

How the treatment is evaluated and performed

  1. Consultation & examinationWe review your dental and medical history, examine the gums and bite, and discuss your goals.
  2. Imaging & planningX-rays and, where needed, a 3D scan (CBCT) help assess bone height, width and nearby structures.
  3. Implant placementThe implant is placed under local anaesthesia. In some cases a temporary tooth can be fitted the same day.
  4. Healing (osseointegration)The bone usually bonds with the implant over several weeks to a few months.
  5. Abutment & crownA connector (abutment) and a custom crown or bridge are fitted and adjusted to your bite.
  6. Review & maintenanceRegular check-ups and professional cleaning help protect the implant and surrounding gums.

Consultation and diagnostic process

Your dentist will usually request X-rays and may recommend a CBCT scan. These show the quantity and quality of bone and the position of nerves and sinuses, which determines whether an implant is suitable, which size to use, and whether grafting is needed first.

General recovery and aftercare

  • Mild swelling or discomfort for a few days is common; follow the medication advice given to you
  • Eat soft foods initially and avoid chewing directly on the area
  • Keep the area clean as instructed — gentle brushing and any prescribed mouth rinse
  • Avoid smoking, which can impair healing
  • Attend every review appointment and maintain regular professional cleaning

Your dentist will provide aftercare instructions specific to your treatment. Clinic to review aftercare text

Potential risks and limitations

  • Infection, swelling or bruising after surgery
  • Implant failing to integrate with the bone
  • Inflammation around the implant (peri-implantitis) if hygiene is poor
  • Rarely, nerve or sinus involvement — careful planning reduces this risk
  • Treatment time can be longer if bone grafting is needed

Your dentist will discuss risks, benefits and alternatives with you before you consent to treatment.

Treatment cost guidance

The cost of an implant depends on the number of implants, the implant system, any grafting, and the type of crown or bridge. A written estimate is provided after your examination and imaging.

Frequently asked questions

Is getting a dental implant painful?

Implants are placed under local anaesthesia, so the procedure itself should not be painful. Most people feel some tenderness for a few days afterwards, which is usually managed with medicines advised by your dentist.

How long does the full implant process take?

It varies. Some cases are completed in a few weeks; others take several months, especially if extractions or bone grafting are needed. Your dentist will explain the expected timeline for your plan.

How long do dental implants last?

With good oral hygiene, healthy gums and regular reviews, implants can last many years. Crowns may need replacement over time due to normal wear. No dentist can guarantee a lifetime result.

Can anyone get an implant?

Not everyone is immediately suitable. Bone volume, gum health, general health and habits such as smoking all matter. An examination and imaging are needed to confirm suitability.
